30-Sep-2005Microsoft unveils phishing protection in new Office update.***
Microsoft has included a very useful anti-phishing feature in the latest Service Pack 2 for its Office 2003 suite. The most significant security enhancements and improvements are in fact made in its Outlook email client.
When enabled, the new Phishing Protection feature automatically disables all links in suspected phishing emails in order to prevent users from heading to spoofing websites. There is also a warning given to indicate suspicious emails, but in case Outlook incorrectly called it a phishing attack, the links can be turned back on.
Suspected phishing scams dumped into the Junk folder will be rendered in plain text so that spoof links may be easily identified. Users will have to move genuine emails into the Inbox in order to display original format.
Along with this update, the SP2 patch also has the usual arrays of security and bug fixes, in addition to stability and performance enhancements for all Office 2003 products.
